“Living Authentically: Celebrating Identity in Appalachia’s LGBTQ+ Community”

As I reflect on my journey as a trans nonbinary, pansexual individual growing up in Appalachia, I am reminded that being true to oneself is not always easy. In fact, it can be downright challenging when faced with societal norms and expectations that often seek to erase or diminish our identities.

But what if we could create spaces where people like me – queer and trans folks from rural West Virginia – feel seen, heard, and valued? What if we could rewrite the narratives surrounding our community and region?

As I look back on the significant LGBTQ victories since Stonewall, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. We’ve made progress in legal rights, military service, adoption, and representation. But despite these advancements, our right to exist and live authentically is under constant attack from extremist politicians.

We’re witnessing bans on sports participation for transgender youth, the loss of access to abortion and gender-affirming healthcare services that are essential to our well-being. And attempts to legally erase our community continue unabated. As a result, LGBTQI+ folks like me – along with our families – are having their entire lives upended and their health and safety threatened.

So what’s the best thing about being LGBTQ? For me, it’s the ability to live authentically, experiencing the world through a unique and beautiful lens that is all my own. It’s a privilege I cherish deeply, even as we face challenges from those who seek to erase our identities.

As West Virginia Pride reflects on its progress and looks ahead to sowing seeds for a stronger community, I am reminded of the power of inclusivity and inspiration. Growing up closeted in Appalachia was not easy, but it’s precisely that experience that gave me the courage to live my truth – as both trans and queer.

And so, let us continue to strive for a world where everyone can step into their truth with safety and confidence. A world where our identities are celebrated, rather than erased or diminished.
