In the Philippines, same-sex marriage is not recognized by law, leaving many members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+ (LGBTQ+) community without legal protections or recognition for their relationships. However, some Filipinos have found a way to marry abroad and start new lives with their loved ones.
Rappler reporter Michelle Abad spoke to singer-songwriter Nica del Rosario and actress Justine Peña about their wedding in Australia and married life in the Philippines. The two women met while working on a project together, but it wasn’t until they were both living abroad that they realized their feelings for each other went beyond friendship.
“We didn’t know what to do,” said Nica. “We just knew we wanted to be with each other.” After much contemplation and research, the couple decided to get married in Australia, where same-sex marriage is legal.
The process was not without its challenges. The couple had to navigate different laws and regulations between their home country of the Philippines and their adopted country of Australia. They also faced skepticism from some family members who did not understand or accept their decision.
Despite these obstacles, Nica and Justine were determined to make it work. They applied for a spousal visa in Australia, which allowed them to live together as a married couple.
The experience has been life-changing for the two women. “It’s like we’re living our best lives,” said Justine. “We can be ourselves without fear of judgment or persecution.”
As they settle into their new life together, Nica and Justine are grateful for the opportunity to build a future with each other.
“We want to show that love is love, regardless of gender or sexual orientation,” said Nica. “We hope our story inspires others who may be struggling with similar issues.”
Their journey serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, people can find ways to overcome obstacles and live their truth.
