As reported by The Punch, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa emphasized that Kano state adheres strictly to Sharia and Nigerian laws, which prohibit same-sex marriages. He called on the public, religious leaders, traditional rulers, media, and other stakeholders to collaborate in combating the state’s moral decadence.
Idris Ahmed Gama, a detained staff member who was invited via WhatsApp to attend a workshop on women’s empowerment at WISE (Women Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality), clarified that he had no affiliations with any LGBTQ advocacy group. He stated that his participation was solely based on the invitation from WISE.
Gama further denied being involved in promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender rights within Kano state. According to him, after the program at WISE, he was interviewed about how police arrested members of an alleged LGBTQ group and said it was a violation of human rights.
The recent development follows heightened tensions over alleged activities advocating for same-sex marriage within the state. Governor Abba Yusuf declared a firm stance against any groups suspected of promoting lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) rights within Kano state. He emphasized that the state government rejects any such agreement that could promote gay and lesbian activities.
The governor’s directive is seen as an attempt to maintain cultural norms and moral standards in line with those of Kano’s people. This move has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many calling for tolerance and understanding towards individuals who identify as LGBTQ+.
