As we celebrate Pride Month, I’m thrilled to share an exclusive conversation with Vince Liban, National Convener of Pride PH. With his infectious enthusiasm and passion for equality, Vince gives us a sneak peek into this year’s most anticipated events.
Last year was historic – the biggest Pride march in Southeast Asia drew 110,000 attendees! This time around, we’re expecting double the fun and excitement. The Love Laban to Everyone Pride PH Festival at Quezon Memorial Circle on June 22 promises to be an unforgettable experience. And did you know that Amsterdam Rainbow Dress is making a special appearance? It’s a symbol of love from the international community, reflecting Quezon City as a safe haven for LGBTQ+ individuals.
But what makes Quezon City stand out in particular? Vince explains that it was one of the first local government units to pass an anti-discrimination ordinance back in 2003. Today, 37% of the Philippine population resides in LGUs with similar ordinances – a testament to their campaign for equality and inclusivity. Mayor Joy Belmonte’s unwavering support is also noteworthy, from healthcare guidelines for transgender individuals to graduation rights that celebrate gender identity.
This Pride Month isn’t just about Quezon City; Vince reveals that there are 11 simultaneous events happening across the country on June 22 alone! And if you think it stops there, think again – Pride celebrations will be taking place throughout the entire month of June. From Northern Luzon to Cagayan de Oro and even CARAGA, communities are coming together to celebrate love and equality.
But what about Muslim Mindanao? Vince shares that while attempts have been made in Zamboanga before, he’s not sure if they’ll be part of this year’s Pride celebrations. Nevertheless, the spirit of inclusivity remains strong across the country.
As our conversation comes to a close, I want to express my gratitude for Vince Liban and his tireless efforts towards equality. His message is clear: let us support each other in our fight against discrimination – not just for ourselves but also for future generations. After all, love knows no bounds!
