“Gold Medal Dreams Come True: Transgender Runner Athing Muia Hiltz Wins Olympic Berth”

Yesterday afternoon in Eugene, Oregon, American transgender runner Athing Muia Hiltz reflected on achieving her childhood dream by winning gold at the 2021 track and field trials. In an Instagram post, she wrote: “Yesterday afternoon… a childhood dream of mine came true. I’m not sure when this will fully sink in… All I know is today I’m waking up just so grateful for my people, overwhelmed by all the love and support, and filled with joy that I get to race people I deeply love and respect around a track for a living.”

Hiltz previously won a silver medal in the 1500m at the Indoor World Championships in March. This victory marks her first Olympic Games appearance, where she will be joined by Emily Mackay, who came in second with a time of 3:55.90, and St. Pierre, who finished third with a time of 3:55.99.

This achievement is bigger than just Hiltz herself; it’s also about her community. As the last day of Pride Month approached, she expressed gratitude for all the love and support from LGBTQ folks that brought her home during those final moments on the track. “All I know is today I’m waking up just so grateful for my people… filled with joy that I get to race people I deeply love and respect around a track for a living.”

The women’s 1500m begins at the Olympics on August 6th, at 4:05 am ET.
